So now that I have officially tried both Five Guys and In and Out, I can give a comparison.

Burgers:

In and out toasts thier buns, which is nice. But the beef in a five guys burger is better.

Fries:

Both are excellent and fresh cut. Five guys gives more.

Shakes:

Five guys, if that store has them, has an excellent variety of shakes. In and out isn’t bad though.

Extras:

In and out has excellent apparel you can buy. Five guys has free peanuts.

So food wise, it’s actually quite close with a little personal preference easily giving one the nod over the other, but where they split is this...

Price:

In and out you can get a meal for less than the cost of just a five guys burger.

Smashburger is where it’s at.

I like Smashburger, but I think it’s too expensive for what you get.

In-n-out is better because the burger is a reasonable serving size, not a eating competition challenge.

Only because they serve alcohol

Five Guys is just too greasy IMO. I also prefer straw fries to a bag full of soggy large fries that are undercooked inside (w hich also tend to be too greasy) . Last t ime I ate there it was $18 for a burger, fries and a shake. Just a few dollars more and I could get a steak at Longhorns.

Did you try the regular Five Guys fries or the Cajun fries?

I absolutely love the taste but you gotta eat em fresh or they get soggy real fast. .

As soon as I said that I remembered my current burger kick is Good Times anyway. I loooooove their fried pickles.

I think 5 guys burgers/fries are way above the rest, but.... They’re freakin spendy. I normally grab like 2-3 burgers if I’m eating out, and doing that at 5 guys with fries and a small shake could easily be like $40......

In-N-Out’s offerings can be leveled up with the secret menu. My order is a #1, animal style, regular spread, animal fries well, no spread.

The upside to Five Guys is that you can get their burgers with bacon and mushrooms for toppings.

They’re a totally different strata of burger, though. In-N-Out is fast food, while Five Guys is fast casual (with decor and packaging that mimics fast food), meaning you’re comparing apples and oranges. You should be comparing FG to like Smashburger or Fuddruckers.

I found Smashburger to be mediocre and overpriced. I was neith er surprised, nor sad, when the one near my house went out of business. Meatheads is my favorite of these chain "fancy" burger places.

Oh, good to know.  Omaha has a couple Smashburgers now.  I’ll have to check them out.

The only time I’ve been to a smashburger was in the airport in Costa Rica.

If you are even in Pittsburgh they also have Rosemary fries. Great burgers and shakes!

Next time you’re in Richmond check out Luther Burger. It’s in the same building as the Sugar Shack on Huguenot. Good food plus beer.

I have yet to go to Sugar Shack (but I was in Girl Scouts with the owner’s sister!) . I’ll add them both to the list.

I’ve always had soggy fries at Five Guys, which detracts a lot from the whole experience.

I’ll try to walk in with low expectations.  That or I’ll just cook for myself for about a week straight so anything made by somebody else is amazing.

I went there twice. Burgers were okay but greasy, fries were so bad I’ll never go back.

I’ve been to two. There’s one right next to Regency that I went to after my last Cars & Coffee, and the Huguenot one that’s right by where my brother lives. The donuts are amazing.

Thank you. The fries are 40% of the experience at a burger place. Adding extra fries does not make up for the fact that you didn’t get your grease hot enough.

Oil isn’t hot enough but they make up for it by leaving them in too long and giving you too many. Blech.

5 Guys isn’t in the same wheelhouse...it’s just different. In & Out, just can’t explain why it’s so good and so stand alone. There’s nothing special about it but there is. There simply is no comparison to In & Out...none .

5 Guys is more of a comparison with Shake Shack...except I’d eat 5 guys again. Shake Shack is a greasy, far too salty mess that costs too much .
